Smoking risks obvious to young
The Toronto Star, Monday, January 20, 2003
Canadian young people are getting the message that smoking is addictive and a health hazard, according to a new survey.
Half of the 15- to 24-year-old smokers surveyed are already trying to quit and almost all of them intend to quit at some point, according to the survey, released for National Non-Smoking Week, which started yesterday. This is a change from a generation ago when young people didn't think smoking was a big concern, said Mike Farrell, director of research for Youthography, a Toronto youth consultancy.
"Now they know this is a problem almost as soon as they start," he said. "They seem to understand innately that there are health concerns immediately to smoking."
Youthography conducted the online survey of 745 Canadian youth with SchoolFinder.com, a Canadian student information Web site, between Jan. 10-13. The results are considered accurate plus or minus 3.5 percentage points 19 times out of 20. Fully 81 per cent of the 122 smokers surveyed had already tried to quit once.

What Do Young Canadians Think about Cigarette Smoking?
Youthography.com, January 20, 2003
What Do Young Canadians Think about Cigarette Smoking?
The majority support enhanced restrictions on public cigarette smoking, half of those that smoke are currently trying to quit and, surprise, just under 1 in 2 of them believe that regular cigarette smoking is worse for you than regular marijuana smoking.
A new national public opinion survey of 745 young Canadians aged 15-24, fielded January 10-13, 2003 and released for National non-Smoking Week (Jan 19-25th, 2003), sheds some new light on how this highly influential group feels about cigarette smoking. The survey was conducted by Toronto-based youth consultancy - Youthography, in partnership with Canadian student information website - Schoolfinder.

Living in Residence at University or College
The Student Guide, Rob Taylor, Senior Editor, EDge Interactive, Vol. 3, Issue 4, April 2003
One of the most pleasant experiences I had while I was going to university was living on campus. As school helped to shape me in terms of preparing me for a career, residence helped shape the person I am today.
I lived in a village of townhouses, each separate with four bedrooms, one or two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room. Depending on where you were in the village, you could have anywhere from four-six people living in your house. You might also have a single room or a double room. Chances were if you were a student in first or second year, you'd be sharing a room.
I found out that the set-up at my school was unusual when I went to visit my friends who were attending other schools. Most often they lived in dormitory-style residences. On each floor of a large building, about 15-20 students would share a living area with a television and a small kitchen and a group bathroom with shower stalls. The kitchen didn't need to be large, as the students were required to buy into a meal plan from the cafeteria.

Student proves silence isn't golden
Metro (Toronto) Newspaper, Tuesday September 16, 2003
Emily Van Halem, a graduating student of Mayfield Secondary School in Brampton, Ontario, has won the 2003 EDge Directories Scholarship. In her winning essay, entitled Silence Isn't Always Golden, Emily outlined her dedication to improving and contributing to her community and Canada.
EDge started the scholarship in the fall of 2002 to reward students who are making Canada a better place to live. For every SchoolFinder.com Directory 2003 and ScholarshipsCanada.com Directory 2003 sold to high schools and libraries across the country, a percentage of the sale was donated to the scholarship fund. Students entering an accredited post-secondary institution in Canada were eligible to apply. Over 80 applicants from all over the country sent in essays and applications for the scholarship.

Ontario Getting Worse; Young Voters
Youthography.com, September 29, 2003
Almost 1 in 2 young Ontarians believe Ontario is in worse shape than it was 5 years ago.
While 39.6% of youth surveyed feel Liberals have the best plan for Ontario, almost the same number (37.1%) lack confidence in any party. Only 22.9% trust Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty, and more than half the respondents (54.6%) cite lack of trust in any one of the party leaders.
A new national public opinion survey of 500 young Ontarians aged 15-29, fielded September 12-16, 2003 and released prior to the Ontario election, sheds new light on how the roughly three million Ontario youth will vote. The survey was conducted by Toronto-based youth consultancy - Youthography, in partnership with Canadian student information Web site Schoolfinder.com.

Double Cohort Students Anxious And Confused As They Face An Uncertain Future
Youthography.com, October 21, 2003
A new public opinion survey of 635 Ontario high-school students fielded Oct 2-7, 2002 by Toronto-based youth and young adult consultancy - Youthography, in partnership with Canadian student information website - Schoolfinder, shows they are reasonably happy with their school's efforts to help. However, they are still very concerned about how the Double Cohort is going to impact their post-secondary education and confused about where to get reliable information.
The Good News
Fully 80% of high school students surveyed gave their schools an "A" (38%) or a "B" (42%) grade in terms of "preparing them for their continuing education". The remaining grades on this general tack showed 14% of surveyed students giving their schools a mediocre "C". Only 2% of all students surveyed gave their school a failing grade.
On a local note, students surveyed in the embattled Toronto District School Board actually gave significantly higher general grades on this criterion with more than half of this sub-sample (52%) giving their schools an "A" grade vs. the 38% total sample average.

It's decision time

There are many different factors to consider when applying to go to university or college.
Many students find that they wish to take a very general schooling, like an undergraduate degree in the arts, to find out who they are and what they are capable of before they embark on the rest of their lives.
